Does God Really Know Me?

I need to know that God knows I’m weak.

I’ve been stressing in these last couple days.  And being that yesterday was my day off, that makes my stress even more stressful.  I realized this morning that my heart just wants to know that God is aware of who I actually am.  Not the outside view, but the inside view.

Here are some Scripture passages that my mind went to this morning:

“A voice says, “Cry!”  And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.  The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass.  The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”  Isaiah 40:6-8

“For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.  As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.”  Psalm 103:14-16

Why do I want to know that God is aware of how frail and weak I am?  It’s because I need to know that God loves me as I am.  Before I asked my wife to marry me, I wanted to be as sure as I could be that she loved me for me.  So at some point in our dating relationship I shared with her things I perceived to be my weaknesses and insecurities.  I wanted her to know me…and to love me as I am.  Since I call her “my wife” now, I guess you know how that went!

With God it is the same.  I have poured out my weaknesses, my brokenness, my wrong, and my sin to Him.  He knows it all.  And He loves me.   The Isaiah passage paints a pretty sad existence of mankind, liking us to grass that is here today and gone tomorrow.  But that is what I am.  One day I feel great, the next I am overwhelmed with fear.  This can even be moment to moment.  So what is my hope? The thing that lasts forever.  God’s Word is eternal.  What God says about me is what will be.

Psalm 103:17 goes on to say, “But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children.”  God’s eternal word tells me that His love for me is the same way: everlasting.  And this is true even though God knows how I really am.

The writer of Hebrew says it best for my heart today: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (4:15).  Not only does my God know who I am, but He knows what it is like to walk in my shoes.  Jesus Christ, the eternal God, walked in this world as I do.  But He did so without sin.  He understands me, but is not like me.  This is greatly comforting to me today.  I don’t just need someone who is like me…I meet people like that everyday.  I need someone is also better and stronger than me.  This Jesus stands head and shoulders above the rest, because He went through everything I go through without falling short of God’s perfect will for Him.  That’s the Person I need in my corner!  That’s the Person I want to be with today!

Thank you, Jesus for accepting me as I am, and thank you for not leaving me there.  Thank you for paying for my wrongs and giving me all I lack.  Thank you for walking with me today!
